The 1906 quake was felt from southern Oregon to Los Angeles. The approaching fire on Sacramento Street, San Francisco. The quake is remembered for the San Francisco fires 2831 acres burned, destroying 28,188 structures. Violent shocks punctuated the strong shaking which lasted up to a minute. This is San Francisco City Hall after the earthquake. The epicenter was just south of San Francisco. Offset creeks, sag ponds (depressions along the fault which often become filled with water in winter), escarpments, shifted fences, and damaged trees are lasting evidence of the quake.Īt 5:12 AM on Apthe San Andreas Fault shifted and caused damage from San Juan Bautista to Cape Mendocino. The resulting surface features can still be seen today. In 1906 the land at Fort Ross shifted 12.6 feet along a narrow well-defined area above the plate movement. These sediments were deposited underwater on the Pacific plate forty to sixty million years ago, and have moved from the south about three hundred miles up the California coast. The fort itself lies on marine sediments to the seaward side of the fault. California’s 1906 earthquake was the sudden result of such motion. On this portion of the fault the movement tends to be in sudden large events, and it is thought that this section of the San Andreas Fault moves significantly only every few hundred years. The fault is the result of the boundaries of the Pacific and North American plates passing by each other. It goes back offshore at Point Arena.Ĭalifornia’s major earthquake rift zone, passes through San Francisco and comes ashore two miles south of Fort Ross, then runs north and through the orchard. From Fort Ross the fault continues overland, forming the valley through which the Gualala River flows. The San Andreas fault runs offshore from around Tomales bay in Marin, but comes ashore at Fort Ross. The 1906 earthquake that destroyed San Francisco was centered very near to Fort Ross, and many of the Russian-era buildings were destroyed in that 1906 event. There is a red marker on the road, marking the actual faultlline. If you look carefully at the lay of the land above the fort you can see it, and if you walk up Fort Ross Road, the faultline is clearly visible. All of this is a testament to the incomparable power that these forces of nature can unleash, making the park one of the more accessible destinations at which to witness first-hand the power of plate tectonics.įort Ross sits on the ocean side of The San Andreas fault zone. Even visitors with an untrained eye can see how the sag ponds left behind from the rift caused by the 1906 quake clusters of redwood treetops directly on the fault are still damaged and cracked, and there is a clear offset to the gently sloping coastal hill.Īlso in our Fort Ross Visitor Center, we have photos documenting the sizable damage the 1906 quake caused to the historic fort compound, in particular the Fort Ross chapel. The park provides several clearly visible markers of the 1906 temblor, all of which are fairly accessible to the road just uphill from Highway One. This world-famous fault runs along much of the length of the state, skirting on and just offshore California’s coast, and it clearly comes ashore at Ross where its 1906 legacy is still visible.įort Ross is an excellent destination to witness first-hand the powerful effects of plate tectonics and the lasting effect of big earthquakes. Those quakes - a 6.4-magnitude temblor on July 4, followed by a 7.1-magnitude quake the next day - originated along two other fault lines nearby. The San Andreas fault, California’s major earthquake rift zone, is one natural feature that elicits a strong response from most visitors - many of us have experienced earthquakes and all of us have seen photos of how powerful they can truly be. The reason for this sudden change, according to the study, was destabilization caused by the Ridgecrest earthquakes in July. The fault is capable of producing a magnitude 8 earthquake, though it's currently moving at a slow, continuous pace - a process known as "creeping." On Thursday, scientists released a study warning that the Garlock fault, which runs through the Mojave Desert in southern California, has been moving for the first time on record. So when researchers detected strange seismic activity along a major California fault line this week, it prompted a familiar question: Is the Big One coming? Scientists expect to experience this "Big One" in their lifetimes - though they're not sure where or when. It often indicates a user profile.Īt any moment, an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or higher could ripple through California, leading infrastructure to topple, power to shut off, and buildings to collapse. Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. However their efforts were constrained by an earlier agreement that these activities would not begin until later into any future war (with the MOI to initially focus wholly on the issue of official news and censorship). The MOI’s planners had first considered ‘Home Publicity’ in August 1937 and returned to the subject in July 1938. The ‘Keep Calm’ design was never officially issued and only a very small number of originals have survived to the present day. It was produced as part of a series of three posters that would be issued in the event of war (the others read ‘Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory’ and ‘Freedom is in Peril Defend it with all Your Might’). 'Keep Calm and Carry On’ was coined by the shadow Ministry of Information (MOI) at some point between 27 June and 6 July 1939. This blog post marks the 75th anniversary of this significant cultural artefact by exploring its place in the British government’s preparations for the Second World War and drawing attention to the Treasury compromise which led to the poster’s creation. Yet its popularity also obscures a more complicated history. The phrase has reinforced a popular view of life in the Second World War and has been reproduced on everything from champagne flutes to smartphone cases. They have to be incredibly unique or it will seem like a ‘me-too’ attempt. The instruction to ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ has become one of the most recognisable slogans in British history. “Even if brands put their own spins on it, it’s a double-edged sword. “It has jumped the shark,” said Gutfreund. That number dropped to 14,577 posts in 2014. Between 20, the hashtag has been used in over 108,586 posts out of which 47,340 posts were from 2013. A survey of the use of the hashtag #keepcalmandcarryon hashtag on Twitter between September 2010 and present day by social analytics firm Crimson Hexagon, as shown in the chart below, shows that the volume has dwindled after peaking in 2013. More recently, the phenomenon seems to be waning. “You can put anything in it, and it goes.” “It’s just a simple design that can be used in a lot of different ways,” said Fernanda Suarez, social media manager at Huge. The original typeface by the British Ministry of Information was designed to be hard for the Germans to counterfeit it. The slogan’s classic design has also contributed to its appeal. It helped that it could be easily personalized. In the 2000s, America’s global war on terror had begun, to be followed by the recession, which helped the slogan take off and develop a life of its own, said Christian Hughes, principal and president at agency Cutwater. Retailer Juicy Couture came up with “Keep Calm and Choose Juicy” a few years ago, while Major League Baseball promoted inter-team rivalry by selling sports merchandise such as “Keep Calm and Beat the Red Sox.” E-retailers like Amazon and Etsy have thousands of products with various versions of the slogan. Brands haven’t hesitated to incorporate it over the years. There’s “Keep Calm and Have a Cupcake” merchandise for sweets lovers and “Keep Calm and Kill Zombies” for wannabe zombie slayers. It has also spawned remixes and parodies, in part because brands have come up with their own versions and in part because one U.K.-based company has trademarked the phrase across the European Union and the U.S.Įither way, there seems to be a version for everyone. Since then, it has become a global cultural meme, plastered on everything from T-shirts to coffee mugs to cuff links. “Keep Calm and Carry On” was discovered in 2000 on an abandoned propaganda poster from the Second World War in a second-hand bookshop in England. Perhaps the only downside was that Asus doesn't include a wall mount as an option, meaning you have to stand the device on a surface. On the top end, the TP-Link was faster and could handle more devices simultaneously, which is exactly what it was designed to do, but for the vast majority of tasks, the RT-AC86U was excellent, sending fast broadband into the depths of our testing facility. In use, both the TP-Link and Asus performed exceptionally well. For most people, the AX11000 is likely too much, though, and the Asus is therefore a safer choice. But I have already installed Oracle Java JDK. We personally quite like both of these designs and because they're so similar, the choice becomes a little bit easier. And it works, in our view: the design of the AX11000 is so out there that we don't mind it. In terms of raw specs, TP-Link has really pulled out all the stops. Unless you need the very best, the Asus RT-AC86U will do the job. The differences between these two routers are fairly pronounced and for good reason: TP-Link's is aimed at the very top of the market, including pretty much everything you could possibly need, while Asus' is firmly focused on being the best budget router going.Īnd they both succeed at their respective jobs, which could well make your decision a lot easier. The school was set up under the auspices of local rabbis, for the orphaned children of murdered deportees. Gainsbourg obtained work teaching music and drawing in a school outside of Paris, in Le Mesnil-le-Roi. He never saw action and spent the time playing dirty songs on his guitar, visiting prostitutes and drinking, later admitting that the service made him an alcoholic. In 1948, he was conscripted by the military for twelve months of service in Courbevoie. They married on 3 November 1951 and were divorced by 1957. There, Gainsbourg would meet his first wife Elisabeth "Lize" Levitsky, daughter of Russian aristocrats who was also a part-time model. In 1945, Gainsbourg's (Ginsburg's) father enrolled him into Beaux-Arts de Paris, a prestigious art school, before he switched to the Académie de Montmartre, where his professors included the likes of André Lhote and Fernand Léger. Gainsbourg attended the Lycée Condorcet high school in Paris but dropped out before completing his Baccalauréat. Limoges was in the Zone libre under the administration of the collaborationist Vichy government and still a perilous refuge for Jews, and it became even more dangerous after Germany occupied it in 1942. During the occupation, the Jewish Ginsburg family was able to make their way from Paris to Limoges, travelling under false papers. The identifying yellow star that Jews were required to wear haunted Gainsbourg in later years he was able to transmute this memory into creative inspiration. Gainsbourg's childhood was profoundly affected by the occupation of France by Germany during World War II. Joseph Ginsburg was a classically trained musician whose profession was playing the piano in cabarets and casinos he taught his children-Gainsbourg and his twin sister Liliane-to play the piano. He was the son of Jewish emigrants of Turkish, Russian and Ukrainian origin, Joseph and Olga Ginsburg, who fled to Paris via Istanbul after the 1917 Russian Revolution. Gainsbourg wrote over 550 songs, which have been covered more than 1,000 times by diverse artists. His lyrical works incorporated wordplay, with humorous, bizarre, provocative, sexual, satirical or subversive overtones. Gainsbourg's varied musical style and individuality make him difficult to categorise, although his legacy has been firmly established and he is often regarded as one of the world's most influential popular musicians. His artistic output ranged from his early work in jazz, chanson, and yé-yé to later efforts in rock, zouk, funk, reggae, and electronica.
